Healthy Halloween Treats for the Whole Family

As soon as the first leaves begin to fall and the temperature starts to drop, the countdown to Halloween begins. This annual celebration gives both adults and children alike the chance to play pretend and indulge just a little.

Are you gearing up for an eerily fun night? If so, we’re here to offer up a few tooth-healthy Halloween treats that will fill you up without compromising that bright smile you’ve worked so hard to maintain.

These seven snacks are so fun and festive that you’d never guess they’re actually good for you too!

1. Mummy Pizzas

Mini pizzas are already a kid’s best friend. This mummy pizza recipe takes it up a notch for a treat that’s spooky good.

With a dough made from just spelt flour, sea salt, and extra-virgin olive oil, the base is already healthy and delicious. Just mix those ingredients until a ball forms and divide it into three small pizzas.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, then add tomato sauce on top of each one! For the mummy effect, cut strips of cheese and crisscross them on top. Slices of black olives make convincing eyes.

Pop the pizzas back in the oven and bake for an additional five to 10 minutes and you’re done!

2. Halloween Banana Popsicles

Did you know that bananas are full of vitamin C, vitamin D, and fiber? They also contain important minerals such as potassium, manganese, and magnesium. This means they’re great for your teeth and make a tasty snack for your family!

These halloween banana popsicles couldn’t be easier to make, but they make a major statement. Start by slicing four large bananas in half crosswise. Then slice each segment lengthwise so that you wind up with four slender pieces.

Place a popsicle stick in the bottom of each piece, and place everything on a baking sheet. Freeze for at least 30 minutes.

You can turn your frozen bananas into ghosts by mixing Greek yogurt with a few tablespoons of powdered sugar. Dip the banana slices in the mixture and add two mini chocolate chips for the eyes!

3. Pumpkin Spice Granola Clusters

We officially deem October as Pumpkin Spice Month, and for good reason. This time of year is just begging for the rich notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves!

These pumpkin spice granola clusters are a great way to get your fix without all of the added sugar and caffeine in your favorite seasonal latte. To make them, start by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then mix the following in a big bowl:

  • Old-fashioned oats
  • Shredded coconut
  • Mini pretzels
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Dried cranberries
  • Brown sugar
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Pumpkin pie spice

The main binding agent in this recipe is coconut oil, along with a little honey and brown sugar. Once you heat that on the stove, pour it over the mixture, then bake it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes!

4. Spider Deviled Eggs

Want to turn a family-favorite side dish into an awe-inspiring Halloween appetizer? Simply prepare your favorite deviled egg recipe, such as this one for spooky spider deviled eggs.

With classic ingredients like vinegar, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper, you might think it’s a relatively tame concoction. However, the addition of a black olive “spider” gives it a fun twist!

To make the creepy-crawly, cut one whole olive in half lengthwise. Place one of the cut sides down on the deviled mixture inside your hard-boiled egg. Then cut up the other half of the olive into thin strips and use those as legs!

5. Jack-o’-Lantern Bell Peppers

Stuffed peppers are a can’t-miss weeknight staple. Why not celebrate Halloween by transforming this meal into one they’ll never forget? Of course you’ll need orange bell peppers for this one!

To make jack-o’-lantern bell peppers, start by sauteing a little garlic and onion in coconut oil. Then add in ground turkey and your favorite veggies. This one calls for zucchini, chopped broccoli, and chopped tomatoes, but feel free to swap them out for ones from your garden.

Cook the mixture until the turkey is done. Then carve out the ribs from inside four bell peppers. Here’s where the fun comes in.

Using a small paring knife, cut jack-o’-lantern shapes into the front of the peppers to create faces. Then fill each one with your veggie mixture from the stovetop. Top each pepper with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese, and put the tops of the peppers back on.

Bake at 425 degrees for 35 minutes and dig in!

6. Monster Apple Bites

Great for your teeth, apples are one of our top recommended snacks! With these monster-themed apple bites, they’re even better.

Delight your kids by quartering two green apples. Then cut the middle out of each quarter to make a little mouth. Fill that space with sunflower butter or natural peanut butter.

Next place a few sunflower seeds on the top of each piece to create teeth, and add a strawberry slice for the tongue. To make edible eyes, you can follow this simple recipe.

7. Healthy Witches’ Brooms

As dental professionals, we know how great dairy is for your teeth. We also know that kids of all ages love cheese sticks, which makes this one of our favorite healthy treats for Halloween!

To make this witch’s broom snack, start by cutting a few cheese sticks in half. Then use a sharp knife to cut small slits into the bottom of each stick. This makes the bristles of your broom! On the top of each stick, make a small hole with the tip of your knife.

Insert a small carrot or celery stick into that hole and you have an easy, delicious broom! Now you just need something to sweep. Square-shaped mini pretzels resemble cobwebs and make a great accompaniment to this nibbler.

Enjoy these healthy Halloween treats.

This year, avoid the dreaded toothaches and bellyaches by serving up these fun and healthy Halloween treats! As you indulge, remember how to enjoy sugar responsibly.

Instead of drawing it out the entire night, try to consume most of your sugar in one sitting. Then, once you’ve consumed it, wait about 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. This way your saliva has time to neutralize your oral pH, and you won’t damage your enamel when you brush.

As always, our dental team is here for you. If you have any questions or need to book an appointment, contact us today.
