Sedation Dentistry for Multi-treatment Appointments

Sedation dentistry offers an extra level of comfort for patients who suffer from dental phobia or have difficulty sitting still for extended periods of time. While many patients are familiar with the benefits of sedation when undergoing invasive procedures like tooth extraction or root canal, the use of sedation can also benefit patients who are undergoing lengthy treatments.

Our office offers multiple forms of sedation dentistry for multi-treatment appointments. Under the effects of safe and effective dentistry at our Corpus Christi, TX, dental practice, a two-hour treatment can feel like it elapsed in a fraction of that time.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry during Lengthy Treatments

If you are a candidate for a multiple-treatment appointment, you may benefit from sedation dentistry. Depending on the number and type of procedures that you are undergoing, multi-treatment appointments can last anywhere from one to a few hours. Sitting still for that long can be uncomfortable. If that discomfort leads to fidgeting and constant adjustments, that can interfere with the doctor’s ability to work efficiently.

There are many benefits to undergoing multiple-treatment appointments. These visits to our Corpus Christi dental practice can address oral health or cosmetic issues. Treatment plans like full mouth reconstruction or smile makeover can deliver dramatic results with just one visit.

We understand that our patients’ time is valuable. Rather than visiting our Corpus Christi office several times, a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction can save you valuable time. Some treatment packages can even offer cost-savings. Similar combined procedures can be scheduled to address oral health problems.

Sedation dentistry addresses comfort issues by allowing patients to physically relax throughout their treatment. Sedation also changes time perception. Many of our patients report that, under the effects of sedation, time seems to fly by. Imagine undergoing a two-hour procedure and it only felt like 10 minutes. It’s possible under the safe and monitored effects of sedation.

Sedation Options

Our office offers three sedation options: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Dr. Nicholas Perry Orchard can recommend a suitable sedation option depending on the length of your procedure and other factors. Each sedation option places patients in a dream-like state where they feel relaxed, euphoric, and calm.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is administered through the nose. The sedation option enters the bloodstream through the lungs where it then reaches the brain and central nervous system. Nitrous oxide is considered a mild sedative, and its effects quickly wear off once the supply of gas is turned off.

Oral sedation is given through a prescription drug. The sedative effects vary, depending on the type of drug that is given. Oral sedation can take several hours to fully wear off, meaning you will have to arrange for someone to drive you home.

IV sedation is administered through an IV. This option delivers heavy sedative effects and is used for more lengthy procedures.
